It had been a really great day with Scottie, probably the unmitigatedly best day he'd had in a long time. So Caleb had hugs and support to spare for Katie, who was family, and what was today about except family? He told her to come over and sprawled on the couch with some HGTV show on just to zone out in front of while he waited. Scottie was asleep, so he told Katie to just let herself in, and by the time she got from the front door to the couch, his arms were wide open.

Katie (Jean?) was a gift to the Summers family no matter where they were, apparently, and no matter which Summers might need her: she was babysitting Scottie, which meant that Caleb was free to spend some time with Seth, at Seth's place, where there were no children or even roommates who could interrupt.

Seth hadn't been filming today, but he did have pages to learn. So, while he waited for Caleb to arrive, he was pacing his apartment. He was shirtless, in gym shorts and reading glasses, committing lines to memory by reading them aloud, over and over (his preferred method).

A bottle of wine was chilling in an ice bucket by the couch, because Seth was dramatic like that; on the coffee table was strawberries dipped in chocolate. Next to them was a red rose with a label on it that read 'for Caleb.'

Even for someone as fast as Jean-Paul had been -- and no one was faster than Jean-Paul -- it had been hard, in that life, to find dedicated time for romance. Jean-Paul had learned to carve it out of stolen moments; here, Seth appreciated the extra time even more than he ever had, and he planned to make the most of it.

He buzzed Caleb into the building and propped his front door ajar as he waited for him to arrive, still pacing and reciting, taking every last second for work until he needed to shift into play mode.

"Hey, Godzilla? Can I talk to you for a minute?" Scottie had been big into a certain city-destroying monster of late and, as a consolation for not being old enough to go see the new movie, Caleb had taken to helping her build sprawling cities in the living room for her to then demolish while making roaring noises. That's where he was sitting now as he called to her on her way back from the bathroom to her room.

"I didn't eat all the Oreos, some of them fell on the floor and I missed the five second rule so I had to throw them away," she answered immediately, like she'd been waiting to get caught.

"...there is nothing I believe about that, but we'll talk about that later. C'mere." He waited until she sat down on the floor with him, both of them idly turning pieces of the latest city over in their hands. "You know how I've met some new people recently, like Katie and Sam? Well there's someone else important to me, and not just in a friend way." Caleb paused, taking a deep breath. "I like him a lot, in a romantic way. He's my boyfriend, actually."

Scottie didn't even take a beat before replying, "Like Flynn Rider and Rapunzel?"

Caleb knew the reference was because they'd just watched Tangled again the day before, but he was a little perturbed by how well it fit. He wondered if Scottie had accurately pegged her father as the Rapunzel in that situation in more than just the likes-a-boy way. "Yeah, sure," he answered simply, giving her room to ask more questions if she wanted to, or just process.

He didn't see her follow-up coming. "Are you going to get married like they did?"

Caleb didn't recall them getting married at the end of the movie, as was typical in a lot of earlier Disney movies, but then he remembered the short sequel. Not that that was what he was supposed to take from the question. "I don't know. Maybe one day. People usually take a little longer to get married in real life than in movies. For now we just care about each other a lot and like spending time together."

Scottie took a moment to think about that, but eventually she nodded like that checked out. Caleb was once again glad for all the conversations they'd had about the difference between real and pretend.

"Is that okay with you? Do you have any questions?"

"Does that mean you like boys instead of girls?" she asked, winding a toy car through narrow 'streets'. It was more fun when the buildings were close enough to crash into each other and topple like dominos when she starting smashing.

"Well, some of the people I liked in the past were girls, and some were boys. But right now I like a boy, yes."

"When did you like those other people?"

Oh good, she decided to go in a direction that didn't require him to into identity politics or anything bigger than himself. "Back before I was your dad."

She was a logical kid, and could put two and two together pretty easily. "But you didn't get married to any of those people."

"Nope."

"Why not?"

Caleb took a minute to answer that one; some concepts were easier to simplify and explain than others. "Because not everything has to be forever. Like how you had some friends in preschool or kindergarten that you aren't friends with anymore."

"If you do get married, will I have to call him Dad too?"

Caleb knew one of the kids in her class had a step-dad and had been pushed into calling him Dad really early on, so it wasn't a ridiculous assumption on her part. It still made him want to sigh--more on that other kid's behalf than on his own. "Nope. No matter what happens, you can just call him by his name, which is Seth. And you don't have to call him anything until you're ready to meet him, okay?"

"Okay."

He paused to make sure she didn't have anything else to add before he continued, "And when you do meet him, it'll be like when you met Katie or met Sam. It'll be all of us hanging out like normal. And if you have a problem or you're uncomfortable, you can tell me and we'll leave."

"He's not gonna be my babysitter like Katie?"

Caleb shook his head. "Nah. Mostly it's gonna be me and him hanging out. Katie would probably get jealous anyway, if he was."

Scottie giggled. "Katie likes me better than you!"

He snorted and admitted, "Everyone with good taste does, Scooter."

She was clearly pleased by that, and for a few moments they both just played with the things in front of them silently. Then: "Do you want me to meet him?"

Caleb nodded and gave her a little smile. "Yeah, I do. But only when you're up for it."

"Could we go see Detective Pikachu if we invite him?"

He really should have expected to be outmaneuvered like that. "...Yeah, we probably could."

"Does he like Pokemon?" Scottie asked, tentatively excited.

"I don't know, but he can't know less about them than I do." Caleb basically only knew Pikachu and a handful of others, and only after repeated instruction from Scottie. He'd probably known more when he was younger and they'd first become popular, but he certainly didn't remember any specifics. "I bet he'd go with us even if he isn't a super Pokemon fan, though."

"Okay, we can do that then!"

"You got it, kiddo." It seemed like a win for everyone involved, so Caleb was going with it. "So about those Oreos..."

To say Caleb was nervous about letting Sam meet Scottie was an understatement. She was pretty chill about the whole thing; Caleb had told her a friend of his was coming over for dinner and she'd just shrugged and made an off-hand comment about him suddenly having a bunch of new friends that made him laugh (entirely at himself) at how on-point she was. Not quite eight and still way too observant for Caleb's comfort. Still, he made sure to remind her that she could tell him if she was uncomfortable or if she wanted Sam to leave, and if she got bored she could go play and ignore the grown-ups, as long as she was polite about it.

Honestly, he was far more worried about his own ability to remain polite if things went badly than about Scottie's.

He cleaned the grill before Sam was due to arrive while Scottie kicked her soccer ball around their little backyard. Caleb figured that a little sunshine and fresh air would be good for all of them, and if being outside instead of inside made everything feel more casual and everyone feel less trapped, that could only help the chances of things going smoothly.

Sneaking Seth into the house after Scottie was asleep was not an ideal solution, but it was the best choice he had right now. Once he had another babysitter, he could schedule more nights away from home. Once Scottie knew about Seth and had been introduced to him, Caleb wouldn't have to hide him from her. Until then, this was really the only way to go--because of course just not seeing Seth wasn't an option.

Having successfully done it once already, letting Seth into the house and getting him quietly to the bedroom was, thankfully, far less nerve-wracking. Caleb was still over-cautious when closing the bedroom door, doing it far more quietly than he probably would any other time he was closing it after Scottie's bedtime, something he realized amusedly as he locked it behind them. (Scottie was pretty good about knocking rather barging through closed doors, but it wasn't a risk he was going to take when the fix was so easy.)

"Falling for me, huh?"

Seth didn't have a resolution for his grief, or the extremely specific and unpleasant feeling of being married and also extremely not married. He didn't have a resolution for the discovery and loss of a beloved sister, let alone an entire life.

But what he did have was a resolution for what had between himself and Caleb. What he had was confirmation that their bond was genuine and borne of this life, right here and right now, in this year, in this town.

And Seth knew, like Jean-Paul knew, that life was aggressively short and unconscionably difficult. Seth, like Jean-Paul, knew that circumstance wasn't an excuse; that good things had to be fought for or else they would be lost.

So Seth was grieving, and confused, and overwhelmed with memories. But he also wanted to kiss the hell out of Caleb. So that's what he did: he went to Caleb's, and he texted when he was outside so he wouldn't wake up Caleb's daughter, and when the door opened, he kissed Caleb like a greeting and an apology and reassurance that, despite the trauma and confusion, this man still wanted the man that was Caleb.

Was Seth actually up for a good sixteen hours in bed with Caleb? He'd just had a seventeen hour shooting day that ended, oh, six hours before Caleb was set to arrive. Still, Seth seemed to have plenty of energy left for this hookup.

If you could call it a hookup. It was an intimate plan for such a casual one, the long stretch of time to unwind and make out and have sex and stay close together, naked in bed, like actual lovers. It was a far cry from NYC app hookups that lasted maybe 20 minutes, but then, maybe things were different out here.

But then maybe it was different because Caleb had seemed to look at Seth and know him, and their vibe had been strong, and their chemistry great, so: why not explore it?

So Seth slept for five hours and ten minutes, showered and threw on jeans and a tee, ate two bananas, brushed his teeth, and even answered two emails before he had to buzz Caleb in. Was that a flutter in his chest? Hard to say!

We don't do a big thing for Mother's Day at our house for probably obvious reasons, but we grill and hang out and try to enjoy the (hopefully) good weather in the afternoon/evening. If you want to come, you'd be welcome. Katie will be there, and maybe Dani too, and of course me and Scottie.

1. Do you happen to be free next Saturday? Like all day next Saturday? Because I have a very tempting offer from Seth but I've heard that you're not supposed to leave your almost-eight-year-old alone in the house for 12 hours with no supervision.

2. It occurs to me that I have no idea where your parents are or what your relationship with them is like, so I don't know if you have plans on Mother's Day, but you're welcome to chill with us.

3. Would you be up for doing a mural in Scottie's room? I would pay you, obviously. I was thinking of painting her room for her birthday and honestly a mural would be way cooler. She has a lot of great ideas in that head of hers, and I know you could pull them off way better than I ever could.

4. Feel free to tell me to stop trying to monopolize your life like any time here. I know you have way more interesting people to spend all your weekends on. Except the last weekend in May is Scottie's birthday party so you have to let me monopolize you then. Sorry, orders from the munchkin.

Seth might spend too much time at Phoenix Effect looking at men. But if you looked at it another way, he was an excellent patron of local business. He was stopping by the coffee shop every day now, in late afternoons and early evenings, sipping smoothies and looking at the other customers.

On this particular afternoon, he was awarded by a very particular gift. When the man turned to face Seth’s vague direction, he raised his drink in a wave and a salute, giving him a smile. It was the kind of flirting someone could ignore if they were straight or married or busy, but it was clear enough, he figured, to capture any interested parties.

There was a field not too far from Phoenix Effect that was too small for all the various sports leagues in the city to have snapped up for weekend practices or games, but big enough for the fairly flexible game of touch football, so that's where they played. People came and went for most of the afternoon, though the game itself only lasted an hour and change. Almost everyone played, but there were several people watching, choosing to cheer or heckle or talk amongst themselves as it suited them.

When everyone got together enough to actually start the game, they divided into two teams, with Matteo as the referee. Zach's team was made up of Hazel, Max, Hanne, Nori, Nick, Alex, and Oliver; Kyle had Elspeth, Joel, Carrie, Caleb, Irene, Sam, and Elena on his team. It wasn't a blowout, but Zach's team won by a few touchdowns and were crowned the victors. Despite a couple minor accidents, everyone came out of it in one piece. More or less.

Scottie was over with her teammates, talking and laughing before the game while their coach counted out who was there. Caleb was on the sidelines standing by the two camp chairs he'd brought; this field happened to have a set of wooden bleachers on one side, but not all of them did, and the chairs were more comfortable anyway. Normally he would have settled into one of them already as he drank from his thermos of coffee, but he wanted to make it easier for Katie to spot him.

Kind of amusing, thinking about Jean Grey having to look for someone with something other than her mind.

He was nervous, to be sure. Not because of Katie--she seemed great, and he knew from their conversation on the journals that he didn't have to worry about it going anything like it had with Sam. But having Alex in his head was still a new thing, and he wasn't exactly practiced at spending time with people who were really two people in one, and with Scottie there he felt additional pressure to handle it and not let anything show that might distress his daughter. Still, it would be good to see Jean.

Sam knew he sounded like a creep; Sam knew that Caleb had every reason to be wary of that random man requesting an emergency meeting.

But Caleb had called Sam Scott; on some level, Caleb knew. On some level, Sam had known. And he had felt a connection; hopefully Caleb had too.

Sam pushed his hands into his pockets as he stood near the building and scanned passersby for Caleb's face, but aside from that, his expression, his posture, it was all classic Cyclops. Man on a mission. To get his brother back.

Sam was not doing well this week. Migraines, cluster headaches, bad dreams -- that was his reality right now, and he hated it. He hadn't been able to work, because no one wants a fatigued, pained pilot, least of all Sam. And he hadn't been able to do any of the things he liked doing: thoroughly cleaning the apartment, making dinners for himself and Oliver, even shaving was too hard when he felt like looking at something too closely was going to make his head explode.

Sam wasn't thrilled about leaving the house in his stubble and with his slow, deliberate movements, but Oliver was working and Sam needed new painkillers, and the closest drugstore honestly wasn't that far from their home; it wouldn't be the most fun trip in his life, but Sam could make it easily enough.

He wasn't dressed crisply, as usual. Instead, he was dressed for comfort, in old jeans and threadbare sweater, and his hair wasn't sitting neatly and precisely; he looked disheveled.

Still, Sam barely cared. Just get what you need and get home, right? Straightforward enough -- except for how he slammed into the chest of another man in his path. Way to pay attention, Sam.
