I know it's still five months away, but if I were to, hypothetically, go as Jean Grey for Halloween, which costume should I pick?

Sometimes the person you're falling in love with uses a coffee-shop based micro-blogging platform to tell you that she loves you. Well, it had happened once in history at least, and it had happened just now to Kyle.

What else could he feel and think but that giddy, merry messiness of new love? What else could he do but respond eagerly and in kind?

The minute that Hazel let Kyle know she was available, after Katie was presumably gone and Hazel was alone again, Kyle rushed to her home. He had to see her. He felt like he was moving faster than ever before, even if he really wasn't, and he felt like he was flying. Oh god, it was like love songs were real.

When he got to Hazel's, he made his way to her shed, popping his head inside and trying not to have too intense a smile. "Hey."

After stuffing themselves with a nearly-obscene amount of eggrolls and various other bits of Chinese food, they made their way back to his place. Hazel was enjoying the way their Saturday had turned into an all-day date, with friends and then food and, now, time and space all to themselves. She kicked off her shoes just inside the door and reached to pull him close for a kiss. "So. About those tattoo ideas."

There was a field not too far from Phoenix Effect that was too small for all the various sports leagues in the city to have snapped up for weekend practices or games, but big enough for the fairly flexible game of touch football, so that's where they played. People came and went for most of the afternoon, though the game itself only lasted an hour and change. Almost everyone played, but there were several people watching, choosing to cheer or heckle or talk amongst themselves as it suited them.

When everyone got together enough to actually start the game, they divided into two teams, with Matteo as the referee. Zach's team was made up of Hazel, Max, Hanne, Nori, Nick, Alex, and Oliver; Kyle had Elspeth, Joel, Carrie, Caleb, Irene, Sam, and Elena on his team. It wasn't a blowout, but Zach's team won by a few touchdowns and were crowned the victors. Despite a couple minor accidents, everyone came out of it in one piece. More or less.

Hazel hadn't been to Kyle's place before, and she was looking forward to seeing it. Well, she was looking forward to seeing him most, but she was really enjoying getting to know him better, and you could learn a lot about someone in their own space.

Also there was the benefit of getting to kiss him without anyone else around, which was definitely a plus.

She'd changed out of the painting clothes she'd still been hanging out in when she'd been poking around on the journals and into a colorful knit top and her favorite pair of jeans. Impulsively she stopped and got a small bunch of gerbera daisies for Kyle - red and orange and yellow - which she was holding with a grin when he opened the door.

"Hi."

The best thing about hunting down a food truck with Hazel was, well, hunting down a food truck with Hazel. She had an adventurous spirit, which Kyle was frequently, amazingly, discovering that he could match. They were on the hunt for clues, they were asking passersby if they had seen the truck, they were dashing around corners — it was so much fun. And a sense of fun was easy to lose in the adult world. Kyle was grateful to have it back.

When they did finally find the truck, there was much celebration, including a triumphant and only slightly awkward hug, and then, of course, there was the ordering of food. The next step? Consumption.

“Where should we eat?” Kyle asked Hazel. “Or should we try to walk and eat at the same time?”

Where: Phoenix Effect, a brand new coffee shop -slash- bookstore in the French Quarter
When: Monday evening
What: The grand opening

It's funny. No one can really recall what the space looked like before Phoenix Effect was there.

It's the French Quarter--every bit of usable space has been taken ten times over. And yet somehow, a brand new, incredibly large, impressively immaculate coffee shop -slash- bookstore is just...there. Smack dab in the middle of the Quarter, with two stories, balconies lined with tables, gorgeous wrought iron, a golden-hued facade, and music drifting soft into the air. The chalkboard sign outside is simple:

PHOENIX EFFECT
Grand Opening
"The past is always tense, the future perfect."

Many people are passing it by without a second glance. But any reincarnate in the area feels compelled to stop, give it another glance, turn around and go inside. All the doors and windows are open to the beautiful night, and the warm-wood-and-funky-painted walls exude a welcoming energy. It's almost like coming home.

People are everywhere, milling about and enjoying the free food and drinks (which are all excellent). There is a central courtyard that has been cleared of tables to become a dance floor. Twinkle lights and colorful flags festoon the indoor-outdoor space, with balconies above looking down on the action. There are comfy couches and bookshelf after bookshelf lining the walls with pretty much any book you can think to want. (Literally.)

The decor is a mix of time periods and styles that all seems to blend together seamlessly, and in one corner stands a friendly young woman handing out log-in details for a private usernet you can sign up for, just for Phoenix Effect customers. Even if you've never cared about that sort of thing before, you feel weirdly excited about setting up a profile and giving it a go.

All in all, it's a beautiful space on a beautiful night with a lot of new and familiar faces.
