Okay, so, this time she definitely wasn't going to lose control and do something stupid like kiss Charlie again. She was going to be normal. She was going to be Harlow, Charlie's bestest best friend in the whole world, and that's it.

It took her a little more than the 20 minutes she'd estimated to get there. Between walking down the wrong street once and having to backtrack, and texting Charlie the whole time (which was probably why she'd missed her turn to begin with), it was definitely closer to 25. She took the stairs in her building two at a time, felt something sticky on the bottom of her shoe when she reached one of the landings and had to stop and be grossed out for a minute, and then kept climbing.

Charlie said to come in, but Harlow still gave a little knock before she turned the doorknob and peeked inside. "The stairwell almost ate my shoe, but I'm here."

Are you honestly stealing liquor? You could have just asked me for it. I probably would have said no, but I might have said yes.

He was there early. Even after a few years away from civilization, Mateo was punctual to a fault. He'd also cleaned up a little and got his hands on some new clothes. Nothing as polished as he used to wear--back when tailored suits were practically a requirement--but clean, and less lumberjack chic than he'd been sporting recently.

He kept a bit of the scruff, though. Looking in the mirror for too long still gave him that weird unsettled feeling deep in his gut.

Now Mateo leaned back against the building as he waited, relaxed, ankles crossed, head tipped up so he could watch the sky.

The truth was, he didn't much date.

And by much, that translated to almost never.

Sitting in a booth (he was exactly the type of nerd to go for the corner booth rather than the more popular bar), tapping painted-and-glittery nails against scarred wood, Eli wondered again what he was doing here. He should have made it clear that he was mostly interested in learning more about the collective and local engagement and not anything more carnal...but he'd also flirted with the man, hadn't he? It certainly felt like flirting. And he wasn't in theory opposed to seeing if tonight led to a kiss or five, even if the last time he'd made out had been...

Huh. Three years? Four?

Well, whatever unexpected interest had risen phoenix-like inside of him at their exchange, he was here now, ready to see what happened. Eli wasn't the type of man to run from the unknown.
