Touch Football mega thread
There was a field not too far from Phoenix Effect that was too small for all the various sports leagues in the city to have snapped up for weekend practices or games, but big enough for the fairly flexible game of touch football, so that's where they played. People came and went for most of the afternoon, though the game itself only lasted an hour and change. Almost everyone played, but there were several people watching, choosing to cheer or heckle or talk amongst themselves as it suited them.
When everyone got together enough to actually start the game, they divided into two teams, with Matteo as the referee. Zach's team was made up of Hazel, Max, Hanne, Nori, Nick, Alex, and Oliver; Kyle had Elspeth, Joel, Carrie, Caleb, Irene, Sam, and Elena on his team. It wasn't a blowout, but Zach's team won by a few touchdowns and were crowned the victors. Despite a couple minor accidents, everyone came out of it in one piece. More or less.

What a dream, to have a handsome man to swoop in and kiss her bruised bits better whenever she called. "And there's no one over eighteen who would object to me monopolizing all your glow-in-the-dark band-aids?" She maybe should have asked that before she started swooning but it was all taking her by surprise!
no subject
“No one,” Max confirmed happily. “Is there anyone that might prefer to rescue you themselves?”
no subject
Hanne shook her head. Diego might object to her answer, considering the way the answer was phrased, but he didn't get to rescue her anymore. "It's just me and my Wonder Woman band-aids."
no subject
“I’m no Wonder Woman, but I would be honoured to help.”
no subject
"You'd make an excellent Amazonian princess, I think." She didn't know why it was so easy to picture him wearing a crown, but her imagination had been getting away from her a lot already.
no subject
Max grinned, and immediately said "As long as I get to wear a crown." What? it seemed like the right thing to say!
no subject
Hanne almost tripped over her own feet when he said that. "Are you reading my mind right now or is you wearing a crown just an inevitability we both managed to realize at the same time?"
no subject
"You see it too?" Max smiled at her, surprised. "I can see you in one as well."
no subject
"Do they look like a matching set to you too?" Who would want to rule alone?
no subject
"They do! Very King and Queen of the castle." Because, obviously.
no subject
Hanne smiled up at him. "That sounds like a nice life. Let's go with that."
no subject
"It's a future date. We'll rule a kingdom." Oh. That felt absurdly real. This crush was powerful.
no subject
"I don't doubt it for a second. That's crazy, right?" She had to know if he was feeling what she was feeling, if it felt as out-of-control and yet fated to him as it did to her.
no subject
“If it’s crazy, we’ve got some serious folie a deux happening.” He smiled at her, mostly unconcerned. As long as they were on the same page, it was fine!
no subject
"I honestly don't know if I should be running away or asking you to run away with me." Hanne was never like this; she felt like gravity had shifted slightly and she was trying to regain her balance.
no subject
“Why would you run away?” Max asked, looking at her with big sincere eyes.
no subject
"Because this is--" Too much. Too fast. Terrifying. "I wasn't looking for--" Something sudden and all-encompassing. She couldn't even get the words out she was so frustrated. So like him, to find her freshly knocked out of the sky and upend her world completely.
no subject
“Hanne,” he touched her arm, gently. “I wasn’t, either.” How could he?
no subject
“I’m not good at feeling vulnerable like this,” she admitted, or apologized, or maybe warned.
no subject
“I think we both ought to sit down,” Max suggested, not that he was the kind of person who ever said the word ‘ought.’
no subject
"Yes, let's...yes." They were just outside Phoenix Effect now, and there was an empty little table set a little apart from the others. Hanne sat in one of the chairs and leaned forward, her forearms on the table, not wanting to create any extra space between her and Max.
no subject
Max sat comfortably in the other chair, looking at Hanne. “So, did we just get way too ahead of ourselves?”
no subject
Hanne laughed sheepishly, fingers twisting together so they'd have something to do. "That is a very kind way of putting it, yes."

She cupped her other hand around their joined ones and took a deep breath, trying to do just that: slow down. "There has to be. This isn't usual."
